Change a picture on a button

You can rearrange and modify toolbar buttons, menus, and menu commands by using the mouse or you can use the Rearrange Commands dialog box which is accessible using a keyboard menu. These tasks are identified as (keyboard accessible).

Show Select an existing image for a toolbar button or menu command

On the Tools menu, click Customize.
If the image you want to change is on a toolbar, make sure the toolbar is visible.
How?
1. In the Customize dialog box, click the Toolbars tab.
2. Select the check box for the toolbar you want to display.
In the Customize dialog box, click the Commands tab.
With the Customize dialog box open, do one of the following:
Change a toolbar button image
1. Click the button on the toolbar.
2. In the Customize dialog box, click Modify Selection, point to Change Button Image on the shortcut menu, and then click an image.

Show Change a menu command image

Click the menu name on the menu bar or toolbar, or click the shortcut menu that contains the command with the image you want to change.
Click the menu command.
In the Customize dialog box, click Modify Selection, point to Change Button Image on the shortcut menu, and then click an image.

Note If you change the image for a command on a built-in menu (for example, the Edit menu), that image appears in all views that show that particular menu with that particular command.

Show Copy an image from a graphics program to a toolbar button or menu command

For a clear image, copy a graphic that is the same size as a built-in button image or a menu command image. The default built-in button image is 16 x 16 pixels. A larger image might be distorted because it will be scaled to fit the size of the button.

Copy to the Office Clipboard the image that you want to appear on the toolbar button or menu command.
If you can select the format for the copied graphic, select a bitmap or picture format.
Switch to the Microsoft Office or Office family program you want to paste the image to.
On the Tools menu, click Customize.
Make sure the toolbar you want to change is visible.
How?
1. In the Customize dialog box, click the Toolbars tab.
2. Select the check box for the toolbar you want to display.
In the Customize dialog box, click the Commands tab.
Do one of the following:
- To paste the copied image to a toolbar button, click the button, click Modify Selection in the Customize dialog box, and then click Paste Button Image on the shortcut menu.
- To paste the copied image to a menu command, click the menu that contains the command image you want to change, click the command, click Modify Selection in the Customize dialog box, and then click Paste Button Image on the shortcut menu.

Show Copy an image from one toolbar button or menu command to another

On the Tools menu, click Customize.
Make sure the toolbar you want to change is visible.
How?
1. In the Customize dialog box, click the Toolbars tab.
2. Select the check box for the toolbar you want to display.
In the Customize dialog box, click the Commands tab.
To copy an image, do one of the following:
Copy a button image
1. Click the toolbar button that contains the image.
2. In the Customize dialog box, click Modify Selection.
3. Click Copy Button Image on the shortcut menu.
Copy a command image
1. Click the menu that contains the image, and then click the command.
2. In the Customize dialog box, click Modify Selection.
3. Click Copy Button Image on the shortcut menu.
To paste an image, do one of the following:
Paste the copied image to a toolbar button
1. Click the button you want to change.
2. In the Customize dialog box, click Modify Selection.
3. Click Paste Button Image on the shortcut menu.
Paste the copied image to a command
1. Click the menu that contains the command you want to change, and then click the command.
2. In the Customize dialog box, click Modify Selection.
3. Click Paste Button Image on the shortcut menu.

Show Edit a toolbar button image or a menu command image

On the Tools menu, click Customize.
Make sure the toolbar you want to change is visible.
How?
1. In the Customize dialog box, click the Toolbars tab.
2. Select the check box for the toolbar you want to display.
In the Customize dialog box, click the Commands tab.
With the Customize dialog box open, do one of the following:
- To edit a button image, click the toolbar button, click Modify Selection in the Customize dialog box, and then click Edit Button Image on the shortcut menu.
- To edit a command image, click the menu that contains the image, click the command, click Modify Selection in the Customize dialog box, and then click Edit Button Image on the shortcut menu.
Select the editing options you want.

Show Select an existing image for a toolbar button or menu command

On the Tools menu, click Customize.
If the image you want to change is on a toolbar, make sure the toolbar is visible.

How?

Change a menu command image
1. If the menu you want to change is on the menu bar, click Menu Bar and then click the menu you want in the Menu Bar list.
  If the menu you want to change is on a toolbar, click Toolbar and then click the menu you want in the Toolbar list. For example, click Drawing|AutoShapes to change an image on the Autoshapes menu on the Drawing toolbar.
2. In the Controls list, click the menu command with the image you want to change.
3. Click Modify Selection, point to Change Button Image on the shortcut menu, and then click an image.

Note If you change the image for a command on a built-in menu (for example, the Edit menu), that image appears in all views that show that particular menu with that particular command.

Show Copy an image from a graphics program to a toolbar button or menu command

Copy to the Office Clipboard the image that you want to appear on the toolbar button or menu command.

2. In the Controls list, click the menu command with the image you want to change.
3. Click Modify Selection, and then click Paste Button Image.

1. If the menu command image you want to copy is on the menu bar, click Menu Bar and then click the menu you want in the Menu Bar list.
  If the menu command image you want to copy is on a toolbar, click Toolbar and then click the menu you want in the Toolbar list. For example, click Drawing|AutoShapes to copy an image on the Autoshapes menu on the Drawing toolbar.
2. In the Controls list, click the menu command with the image you want to copy.
3. Click Modify Selection, and then click Copy Button Image.
In the Rearrange Commands dialog box, do one of the following:
Paste the copied image to a toolbar button
1. Click Toolbar and then click the toolbar that contains the button with the image you want to change in the Toolbar list.
2. In the Controls list, click the button with the image you want to change.
3. Click Modify Selection, and then click Paste Button Image.
Paste the copied image to a menu command
1. If the menu you want to change is on the menu bar, click Menu Bar and then click the menu you want in the Menu Bar list.
  If the menu you want to change is on a toolbar, click Toolbar and then click the menu you want in the Toolbar list. For example, click Drawing|AutoShapes to change an image on the Autoshapes menu on the Drawing toolbar.
2. In the Controls list, click the menu command with the image you want to change.
3. Click Modify Selection, and then click Paste Button Image.

Show Edit a toolbar button image or a menu command image

On the Tools menu, click Customize.
Make sure the toolbar you want to change is visible.
How?

Edit a toolbar button image
1. Click Toolbar and then click the toolbar that contains the button with the image you want to edit in the Toolbar list.
2. In the Controls list, click the button with the image you want to change.
3. Click Modify Selection, and then click Edit Button Image on the shortcut menu.
4. Select the editing options you want.
Edit a menu command image
1. If the menu you want to change is on the menu bar, click Menu Bar and then click the menu you want in the Menu Bar list.
  If the menu you want to change is on a toolbar, click Toolbar and then click the menu you want in the Toolbar list. For example, click Drawing|AutoShapes to edit an image on the Autoshapes menu on the Drawing toolbar.
2. In the Controls list, click the menu command with the image you want to edit.
3. Click Modify Selection, and then click Edit Button Image on the shortcut menu.
4. Select the editing options you want.
